Taupo A1 Grand Prix

What a bloody fantastic event! Considering I struggling with an abscess, couldn't help but be impressed or just downright excited by the events on Saturday and Sunday.

Set off early with Kieran to use up our prizes from Radio Hauraki. When we arrived at the venue, weather was very blowy, but we had stunning seats, right on the final bend before the winning line and adjacent to the pit lane. Just behind our stand seats was the paddock where the majority of stuff was going on. Got plenty of grit in our face but it was otherwise decent enough weather.

We got some souvenirs, me kitting myself out with an Ireland T-shirt and hat, K got an Ireland tee and an NZ tee.

He got to meet all the A1 drivers (who were brilliant) and got his Ireland tee signed by them all.

Spoke to one of our close neighbours who's son was in the Toyota racing series, had a good look round the cars too.

Sunday was the big day, weather a big improvement on the previous day, and the place was packed. Kieran went on the pit walk, got to see all the A1 cars, and just generally had a ball.

The racing was fantastic, loud, exciting, crashes, spins, stalls, everything that a big race entails. I have never really seen the attraction in motor racing before, as I had only watched on TV, but up live and close it is a whole new ball game, fast paced and impossible to keep up with all that is going on.

Kieran got his entry ticket signed by the NZ driver, Johnny Reid and had a big thumbs up from him in the pits. It was fantastic, he came first in the sprint race but stalled badly at the start of the big feature race, dropping from 5th to 12th, but he made it up to finish 4th.

Exhausted when we got back home, totally on a down next morning, but one experience that we want to repeat.....
